清乾隆年间是鼻烟壶制造的鼎盛时期，特别是珐琅鼻烟壶，装饰手法和题材内容非常 丰富。目前市场上清朝的鼻烟壶真品已很难寻觅，想买到货真价实的鼻烟壶需要掌握很多相关的专业收藏知识。市场流通有一部分清末的鼻烟壶造型瓷器作品， 实际上是药瓶，并非瓷器鼻烟壶，收藏时要特别注意。
瓷胎鼻烟壶存世量多，市场价格较低，其中以康熙、雍正、乾隆年间制作的作品为珍贵。收藏瓷胎鼻烟壶，初级收藏者可先从青花、青花加紫瓷质鼻烟壶入手，逐步向粉彩等较高档次的瓷质鼻烟壶入手。
玻璃胎鼻烟壶目前在藏市中流通较多，大都做工精致，质地滋润，收藏此类鼻烟壶时可尝试购买一般价格不高的单色玻璃鼻烟壶。而玉石类鼻烟壶以雕工精美的羊脂玉为上品，初级收藏者可先从普通的白玉、青玉鼻烟壶入手。
鼻烟壶，小巧玲珑，造型别致，既可观赏，又能把玩，被收藏爱好者视为珍贵文玩。
中国鼻烟壶小中见大，材质繁多，有玉石、珐琅、水晶、玛瑙、琉璃、陶瓷、金银、犀牛角等；工艺技法变化无穷，包括雕漆、套料、彩绘、珐琅彩绘、雕刻、琢碾、内画等。
上世纪80年代，鼻烟壶收藏才正式形成国内收藏门类，至上世纪90年代中期达到收藏高峰。1996年，北京翰海艺术品拍卖公司举办了国内第一个鼻烟壶拍卖专场，鼻烟壶拍卖市场价格以50%70%的幅度一路攀升。以内画鼻烟壶为例，2000年国内一流大师作品市场价格在1万元到4万元左右，弟子作品价格在3000元至8000元左右；2008年，大师作品价已飙升至5万元到10万元，弟子作品也高达1万元到5万元，年平均上涨50%左右。而清雍正和 道光年间的精品鼻烟壶价格更是高达上百万元。
